Data sources & methodology

All data comes from the Common Core of Data (CCD), the Department of Education's primary database on public elementary and secondary education, published by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The site uses the 2023-24 school year files: the school and district directories, membership (enrollment by grade, race/ethnicity and sex), staff (full-time equivalent teachers), free and reduced-price lunch eligibility, and school characteristics.

The student-teacher ratio is total enrollment divided by full-time equivalent teachers. Free/reduced-price lunch share is the number of eligible students divided by enrollment. Closed, inactive and future schools are not listed. Private schools are not included.
